San Bernardino Teens Go Back-2-Nature
For five days and four nights between June 12 and 16, twenty-eight teens from San Bernardino went on a camping trip to Wrightwood's
Camp Elk as part of the Parks and Recreation Department's Back 2 Nature
program.
While at Camp Elk, the teen's days
were filled with hiking, swimming, rock climbing, archery, and other
activities. All costs,
including equipment, transportation, and meals were provided.
Funded by the California Outdoor Equity Grant Program, Back 2 Nature is designed to provide opportunities for urban youth to experience and enjoy the outdoors. Based at the Rudy C. Hernandez Community Center, the program includes approximately 72 activities in the San Bernardino community for approximately 2,000 participants and 42 trips to
natural areas for approximately 2,200 participants during the three years of the grant.
Activities in the community include community park clean
ups, conservation education, family overnight camping preparation and youth
overnight camp preparation.
Trips to natural areas outside of the community include
youth overnight summer camp at Camp Elk Summer Camp in Wrightwood, teen
overnight Camping in Wrightwood, family overnight summer camp Silverwood Lake
in Hesperia, winter overnight family camp in Cedar Glen, and day trips to Sea World San Diego,
North Etiwanda Nature Preserve, and Santa Monica Pier Preserve.
